When that filter gets clogged up, then the engine is no longer getting the optimal amount of clean air that it should be getting, which then in turn puts a strain on the engine which decreases performance and fuel consumption.

The same principle applies for both oil filters or fuel filter if fitted, and if the filters are not changed, then the engine has to work harder on therefore less efficiently. So when you regularly change the filters then the engine will always operating at peak performance.
